Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) is an Indian non-governmental organization engaged in rural development, financial inclusion, and community based credit and livelihood initiatives. Founded in 1982 by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the organization operates primarily in the state of Karnataka and parts of Kerala.[1]

SKDRDP is known for promoting self-help groups (SHGs) and facilitating access to financial and development services in rural areas. Academic studies have examined SKDRDP as an example of community-based rural development and financial inclusion initiatives in India.[1]

History

edit

SKDRDP was established in 1982 at Dharmasthala, Karnataka, under the leadership of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade. The organization initially focused on charitable and community welfare activities before adopting a self-help group-based development model in the 1990s.[1]

Over time, SKDRDP expanded its operations across Karnataka and developed partnerships with banks and government agencies in the areas of financial inclusion and rural livelihoods.[2]

Operations

edit

SKDRDP operates across rural and semi-urban areas in Karnataka and parts of Kerala.[1]

The organization functions through a network of district and taluk-level offices supported by field staff responsible for programme implementation.

Self-help groups

edit

The promotion of self-help groups (SHGs) forms the core of SKDRDP's activities. These groups facilitate savings, credit access, and financial literacy among rural households.

Studies have indicated that SHG participation contributes to increased financial inclusion and improved access to institutional credit among rural households.[1]

Financial inclusion

edit

SKDRDP functions as a Business Correspondent (BC) and Banking Facilitator for multiple banking institutions, providing banking services in rural areas through customer service centres.

These services include deposits, withdrawals, remittances, insurance enrolment, and pension facilitation.[3]

The organization also assists beneficiaries in accessing government programmes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana.[1]

Agriculture and livelihoods

edit

Agriculture and livelihood promotion constitute a major component of SKDRDP's activities. The organization supports farmers through self-help groups, Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), agricultural extension services, mechanization initiatives, and farmer producer organizations.[1]

These initiatives include programmes related to agricultural support, livestock development, and access to farm equipment, aimed at improving productivity and rural incomes.[1]

Community development

edit

SKDRDP undertakes community development programmes focused on education, drinking water, sanitation, housing, and environmental conservation.[1]

Among its notable initiatives is the Nammuru Namma Kere programme, which focuses on the rejuvenation and restoration of village water bodies across Karnataka.[4]

Women's empowerment

edit

Women's empowerment programmes form an important part of SKDRDP's activities.[1]

The Jnanavikasa programme serves as a platform for capacity building, leadership development, health awareness, financial literacy, and social participation among rural women.[1]

The organization also operates the Vatsalya programme, which provides assistance to vulnerable individuals including elderly persons and economically disadvantaged households.[5]

Another initiative, Gelathi, provides counselling services and support to women facing personal and family-related challenges.[6]

Social initiatives

edit

SKDRDP conducts social awareness programmes through the Jana Jagruthi initiative, which focuses on de-addiction, public health, sanitation, public awareness and community mobilisation.[1]

The Jana Jagruthi programme also operates the Shourya disaster management initiative, a volunteer-based network that provides emergency assistance during floods, landslides, accidents and other disasters.[7]

Renewable energy

edit

SKDRDP has promoted renewable energy adoption through microfinance-supported access to solar lighting systems, solar water heaters, and biogas plants. In 2012, the organization received the Ashden Gold Award for its work in promoting sustainable energy access among low-income rural households.[8]
