Sensolus is a Belgian company that develops Internet of Things (IoT) hardware and software for tracking "non-powered" industrial assets, such as pallets, containers, trailers and reusable packaging, that lack their own power source or internet connectivity.[1] The company is headquartered in Ghent, Belgium, and also has an office in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States.[2]

History

edit

Sensolus was founded in 2013 in Ghent.[3] Sources identify four co-founders: Johan Criel, who became chief technology officer;[3] Koen Van Vlaenderen, who took the VP of production role;[3] Laurence Claeys, a communication scientist and, at the time, assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, who became product manager;[4] and Kristoff Van Rattinghe, who became chief executive.[5] The company's early product line was marketed under the name STICKNTRACK, a battery-powered tracker designed to be attached to equipment and containers.[6]

By September 2017, Sensolus had secured about €2.75 million in funding from Capricorn ICT Arkiv and Quest for Growth, along with an undisclosed angel investor.[6] According to EU-Startups, an early customer that year was Airbus, which used the technology to track reusable transport packaging between manufacturing sites.[6]

In April 2018, Belgian financial newspaper De Tijd reported that TCR, a provider of ground support equipment to airlines, had adopted Sensolus' tracking technology to locate baggage carts and other non-motorised ground equipment across the airports it serves.[7]

In October 2020, the company raised a further €3.5 million in a round led by btov Partners' Industrial Technologies Fund, with participation from existing investors Capricorn ICT Arkiv, Quest for Growth, and angel investor Annie Vereecken.[5][8] Covering the round, De Tijd quoted CEO Kristoff Van Rattinghe as saying the COVID-19 pandemic had underscored the relevance of the company's product.[9] Sensolus went on to raise a Series B round in January 2021 for an undisclosed amount.[3] As of the mid-2020s, total disclosed funding was reported at approximately $7.4 million across three rounds.[3]

In May 2023, Sensolus announced plans to open its first United States office, in the Atlanta Tech Village, as part of an expansion into the North American market through a local team and partners.[2] Reporting on the move, Trends/Knack wrote that Sensolus was by then tracking more than 200,000 industrial assets for over 200 customers across Europe, naming Airbus, Suez, Atlas Copco and TCR among its clients.[2] The same coverage, and a parallel report by trade outlet Engineeringnet, quoted CEO Kristoff Van Rattinghe as saying he expected the U.S. market to face supply-chain digitisation challenges similar to those Sensolus had already addressed in Europe, and that growth in low-power cellular networks in the U.S. created an opportunity to scale the company's technology there.[2][10]

Products and technology

edit

Sensolus' platform combines battery-powered wireless trackers with a cloud-based software platform. The trackers use low-power wide-area network technologies such as Sigfox, LTE-M and NB-IoT to report location and status data without requiring dedicated infrastructure at customer sites.[5] The company has said its trackers are designed for battery lifespans of up to seven years.[5]

In 2025, Sensolus introduced a newer tracker model, marketed as TRACK 1105, which the company said added support for deployment in Canada and Mexico via LTE-M connectivity, with IP68/IP69K ingress-protection ratings.[11] These later product claims are sourced to company statements and have not been independently verified by secondary reporting.

The software platform allows customers to define "geozones" — geographic boundaries that trigger alerts when tracked assets enter or leave a defined area — and to generate reports intended to support inventory management, loss prevention, and preventive maintenance scheduling.[1]

Recognition

edit

In 2021, the trade publication Manufacturing Technology Insights included Sensolus in a feature on European industrial IoT companies, describing its combined hardware/software approach to non-powered asset tracking.[1]
