The Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is a large-scale luxury convention and resort hotel located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, southeast of Jacksonville, Florida. Opened in 1987, the 66-acre property sits directly adjacent to the global headquarters of the PGA Tour and the TPC at Sawgrass golf complex, serving as the official host hotel for The Players Championship golf tournament.[1]
History and Ownership Transitions
editThe resort was originally developed by the Jacksonville-based conglomerate Gate Petroleum under the leadership of Herbert Hill Peyton, to accommodate the tourism growth surrounding the master-planned Sawgrass community and the PGA Tour's relocation to St. Johns County.[2] Construction concluded in 1987, and the facility opened under the Marriott brand management framework.[1]
In subsequent decades, the hotel's underlying real estate transitioned through several institutional ownership groups. In 2022, Brookfield Corporation of Toronto acquired the property via its buyout of Watermark Lodging Trust.[1] On November 4, 2025, a joint venture consisting of private equity real estate firm South Street Partners and Jacksonville-based homebuilder Dream Finders Homes purchased the resort and its accompanying beach club assets from Brookfield for $149.04 million.[3]
Infrastructure and Facilities
editThe resort footprint contains a multi-story guest tower alongside lower-density detached hospitality villas surrounded by a system of retention lakes.[1]
- Lodging Capacity: The inventory features 511 standard guest rooms, 24 configurations of suites, and 80 individual resort villas.[1]
- Convention Infrastructure: The complex includes a 108,616-square-foot corporate conference center, positioning it as one of the largest corporate meeting hubs in the Northeast Florida region.[1]
- Cabana Beach Club: Located off-site at 619 Ponte Vedra Boulevard, the resort operates a private oceanfront beach club facility for guests. Following severe damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017, the club facility underwent multi-year structural repairs, expanding in 2023 to feature the area's first public-access rooftop venue, known as the 1912 Ocean Bar & Rooftop.[1]
- Golf Privileges: While the adjacent Stadium Course and Dye's Valley Course are independently owned and operated by the PGA Tour's TPC Network, resort guests retain structured playing privileges on both courses.[1]
