Rifat Nuri Sener (born March 28, 1953) was an internationally recognized neuroradiologist.[2] He is known for contributions to the field of pediatric neuroradiology, including the description and naming of a novel neurocutaneous syndrome that was later referred to in the literature as Sener Syndrome.[3][4][5] He was identified as one of the world's leading researchers, representing approximately 2% of the most impactful scientists worldwide, on Stanford and Elsevier's 'World's Top 2% Scientists'[6] list in 2022.[7] Some of his impactful works have been published in journals such as the American Journal of Neuroradiology, Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics, and European Radiology.

Background and research

edit

Sener graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpasa School of Medicine in 1980 and completed his residency at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Radiology in 1985. For over three decades, he served at Ege University Faculty of Medicine in Izmir, Turkey. He was appointed associate professor of radiology in 1988 and was appointed full professor of radiology in 1996, for which he remained active until his retirement in 2020.

Alongside his work in Turkey, Sener contributed to the global exchange of radiological expertise and trained medical professionals around the world through numerous visiting professor and researcher positions internationally, contributing to both medical education and radiology research across a wide range of institutions. His academic appointments included the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (USA), Oslo University Hospital, Ullevål (Norway), Sydney Children's Hospital (Australia), University of São Paulo Faculty of Medicine Clinics Hospital (Brazil), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital (Latvia), Kumamoto University (Japan), Masaryk University Hospital (Czech Republic), Clinical Centre of Serbia (Serbia), Saturnino Lora Hospital (Cuba), Saints Cyril and Methodius University (North Macedonia), and Liaoning Cancer Hospital and Institute (People's Republic of China.[8]
