Ranjini Krishnan (born Moozhikkulam, Ernakulam, Kerala) is an award-winning Indian documentary filmmaker, academic, writer, and entrepreneur.[1][2] She works on gender and intimacy issues in Kerala through films and articles, and is a part of sustainable wellness ventures.[1][3][4]

Early life and education

She grew up in Moozhikulam, Ernakulam. She earned an MA in psychology, followed by a journalism degree, and completed a doctorate in Cultural Studies at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore.[3][5]

Research and academic contributions

Ranjini's research examines intimacy, consent, and sexual politics in Kerala society. Her articles and short films discuss topics such as weddings, virginity, marital rape, and family structures.[5] She has served as a Senior Research Coordinator at Sahapedia, Kochi, and contributed to critical psychology initiatives that integrate social, cultural, and political perspectives.[6]

Filmmaking

Ranjini is producer and scriptwriter of the national award-winning documentary A Pestering Journey (2010),[7][8] and co-scriptwriter of the feature film Kanyaka Talkies (2013),[9][10] which won Best Screenplay at the New York Indian Film Festival.[6][11][12] Her video art project Daughters of Scheherazade (2020), supported by the India Foundation for the Arts, used interviews, poems, and visual installations to explore the cultural meanings of the nuptial chamber and female experience of intimacy and violence.[13]

Writing and media work

Her literary work includes short stories and poems published in Malayalam journals and anthologies such as Puthu Katha (2004). Ranjini has worked in television journalism, qualitative research, and video production, maintaining a cross-disciplinary profile.[5][14] She has spoken at events such as the Kerala Architectural Festival (KAF) 2019, on topics related to design, creativity, and society.

Entrepreneurship

Ranjini is the founder and managing director of Body Tree Naturals Pvt. Ltd., a company that produces organic bath products.[15] The Body Tree venture evolved from her interest in sustainable living after researching environmental toxins and chemicals used in baby products. The brand is noted for its handmade soaps and skincare products, which has been covered in national media.[3][16] She also directs Sradha Culture Lab (OPC) Pvt. Ltd., which focuses on menstrual awareness and research.[17][18]
