Rajendra Prasad Vyas (5 August 1951 – 27 October 2006) was an Indian judge who served as a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court from 2 September 2004 until his death on 27 October 2006.[1] Prior to his elevation to the Bench, he practised as an advocate before the Rajasthan High Court and served in several positions as a Law Officer for the Government of Rajasthan, including Additional Advocate General-cum-Government Advocate.
Early life and education
editRajendra Prasad Vyas was born on 5 August 1951 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into the family of advocate Shri Ram Prasad Vyas. He obtained an M.Sc. in Chemistry in 1973, an LL.M. in 1988, and an M.A. in Political Science in 1992 from the University of Jodhpur. During his student years, he was elected President of the Students' Union of Lachoo Memorial College in 1971 and later President of the Students' Union of Jodhpur University during 1976–77.
Legal career
editHe enrolled as an advocate on 3 December 1978 and commenced legal practice under advocate Shri Marudhar Mridul at the Rajasthan High Court. He was subsequently appointed Assistant Government Advocate, Deputy Government Advocate and Additional Government Advocate. In 1999, he was appointed Additional Advocate General-cum-Government Advocate for the Government of Rajasthan, representing the State in constitutional, civil and administrative matters before the Rajasthan High Court. Apart from his legal practice, Vyas was actively associated with the Rajasthan High Court Advocates' Association, serving as its General Secretary, Vice-President and President.
Academic career
editBetween 1989 and 2003, Vyas taught Civil Procedure Code, Administrative Law and Arbitration to law students. He was known for mentoring young lawyers and law students alongside his legal practice.
Judgeship
editOn 2 September 2004, Rajendra Prasad Vyas was appointed a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court. During his tenure, Justice Vyas decided cases involving constitutional law, civil law, administrative law and service law. His judgments reflected an emphasis on substantive justice and practical application of legal principles. Among the decisions associated with his tenure is Jaswant Singh v. State of Rajasthan, concerning the grant of gallantry awards to police personnel.[2]
Death
editJustice Vyas died on 27 October 2006 while serving as a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court. Tributes were paid by members of the Bench and Bar, who acknowledged his contributions to the legal profession, legal education and public service.
