The Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society is a mathematics journal that publishes original research papers on topics in a broad range of pure and applied mathematics[1]. It has editors in areas including: probability, differential geometry, harmonic analysis, complex analysis, group theory, functional analysis, combinatorics, number theory, ergodic theory, and topology.[2]
After being elected the second President of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society in 1883, Thomas Muir pointed the need for journals in Scotland that publish pure mathematics.[3] The next year, in 1884, the Edinburgh Mathematical Society began to publish its Proceedings to help fill this role.[4]
By 1933 The Scotsman reported the Proceedings was one of the principal scientific journals of the world and issues were sent to many countries across the world.[5]
The Convener of the Editorial Board is currently Sue Sierra (University of Edinburgh).
