Poghos Ter-Davtyan (Armenian: Պողոս Տեր-Դավթյան; 12 November 1880 – 20 November 1920) was an Armenian military commander who took part in the defense of Zangezur during the last years of the First Republic of Armenia. He commanded Armenian volunteer forces in Sisian and was one of Garegin Nzhdeh's closest military associates in the Zangezur campaigns.

Early life

edit

Ter-Davtyan was born in Verin Khotanan, in the Zangezur region of the Russian Empire, on 12 November 1880. He was the son of Solomon and received his early education in his native village before moving to Baku, where a relative, Gaspard Ter-Margaryan, supported his studies in a Russian gymnasium. After finishing school, he entered the imperial Russian army in 1901 and attended military school.

In 1904, he took part in the Russo-Japanese War and fought at the Battle of Mukden, for which he was awarded the Cross of St. George and a special weapon.

Military career

edit

By the First World War, Ter-Davtyan had returned to military activity in the Caucasus. Syuniacyerkir describes him as commander of an Armenian volunteer unit in Baku in 1918, and also notes that he fought alongside Garegin Nzhdeh in the defense of Zangezur.

Legacy

edit

Ter-Davtyan is remembered in Armenian historical writing as one of the commanders of the Zangezur defense and as a collaborator of Garegin Nzhdeh during the struggle for control of the region. Later local articles and commemorative pieces in Syunik have described him as a popular figure in the memory of Verin Khotanan and Sisian.
