He was chairman of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) board during 2007.[3]
Early life and education

Career
editPetroleum industry
editWillcox spent approximately twenty-eight years in the international petroleum industry.[2] In 1986 he was appointed chief executive officer of BHP Petroleum, then the petroleum division of BHP.[5] During his tenure, BHP Petroleum expanded internationally and became one of Australia's largest petroleum companies.[5] He remained chief executive officer until 1994.[1]
Corporate directorships
editFollowing his departure from BHP Petroleum, Willcox became one of Australia's prominent company directors. He was deputy chairman of Lendlease from 1994 to 2000 and was a director of numerous listed companies including AMP Limited, James Hardie Industries, Woodside Petroleum, North Limited, Energy Developments Limited and Schroders Australia.[2]
In 2002 he became chairman of Mayne Group Limited and later chairman of Mayne Pharma.[6]
Willcox joined the board of Telstra as a non-executive director in May 2006 and sat on the company's Audit, Nomination and Remuneration Committees.[7]
CSIRO
editWillcox joined the CSIRO board in 2006.[3] Following the departure of Catherine Livingstone, he became chairman of the organisation in January 2007.[3] His tenure as chairman coincided with public debate concerning the future direction, governance and funding of Australia's national science agency.[3] In February 2007, Willcox stood aside from the chairmanship after being named in civil proceedings brought by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission relating to the James Hardie Industries compensation fund matter.[8] He was subsequently succeeded as chairman by scientist John Stocker.[3]
