Pauline Vermare is a French-American photography curator, historian, and author. She currently serves as the Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum. Throughout her career, she has held prominent curatorial and directorial positions at the International Center of Photography (ICP), Magnum Photos, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In 2022 she was named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2022.[1] She is a scholar of 20th-century and contemporary photography, with a focus on documentary photography, Japanese photography, and the visual representation of the Northern-Irish conflict.
Early life and education
editVermare earned a master's degree in Japanese from INALCO, a master's degree in International Relations from Sciences Po, and a master's degree in Art History from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.[2] She earned her Ph.D. from Lumière University Lyon 2 in 2021. Her doctoral thesis, titled La représentation visuelle du conflit nord-irlandais (1969–1998) (The visual representation of the Northern Irish conflict (1969–1998)), examined the role of photography in documenting the Northern Irish conflict and the subsequent peace process.
Career
editVermare began her career in 2001 at the Paris office of Magnum Photos. From 2002 to 2009, she worked at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, collaborating closely with Henri Cartier-Bresson and Martine Franck. She moved to New York in 2009 to join the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) where she assisted Peter Galassi on the retrospective Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century (2010).[3]
From 2010 to 2017, Vermare served as curator at the International Center of Photography (ICP). During her tenure she worked on The Mexican Suitcase archives and co-curated the traveling exhibition Magnum Manifesto (2017).[4] She subsequently served as the Cultural Director of Magnum Photos in New York from 2017 to 2022.
In late 2023, Vermare was appointed the Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum.[5] In 2004, she curated the museum's "I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now", which received significant critical attention for its effort to expand the photographic canon.
