David V. Shatz

David Vernon Shatz (born July 20, 1954) is an American emergency response physician and trauma surgeon at University of California, Davis hospital in Sacramento, California. Dr. Shatz holds an MD from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Illinois. He completed his residence in surgery at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine in conjunction with Tripler Army Medical Center, and leads with a philosophy of care centered in equality.[1]

Personal life and Education

Shatz was born and raised in La Crescenta, California to Vernon and Marilyn Shatz, with his younger siblings, Rick and Linda. He graduated from Crescenta Valley High School, and went on to receive his B.A. in Bacteriology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a brother of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and a member of the American College of Surgeons.[2]

While working as a resident at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii, David met his wife, Janice, through a blind date set up by friends. They married on Oahu surrounded by family and friends, before moving to Oklahoma where Shatz would be stationed during his military service. Their time in Oklahoma was brief compared to the 20 years they would spend in their next home in Miami, Florida; and the birthplace of all three of their children, Nikki, Connor, and Justin.

Shatz has a passion for skiing, piloting planes, and German Shepherds. He has been a member of the Western Trauma Association since 2000, served on their Board of Directors from 2004-2007, and was the 2018-2019 term President Elect. Shatz served as the President of the Western Trauma Association in winter of 2020.[3] Shortly after moving to Sacramento, he joined the National Ski Patrol with Sierra-at-Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, CA in 2011, and continues to volunteer to this day. In 2019, he was awarded the Alpine Ski Patroller of the Year trophy ski, an award granted by internal staff at Sierra-at-Tahoe recognizing dedication to and love for the mountain and his fellow patrollers.[4]

All three of his children have hours logged in a training pilot’s log, and need to be reminded to stay inbounds when skiing across mountains, results of his drive to share his passions with those he loves. He keeps a plaque in his office, gifted by his wife and their daughter, which reads “M.D. stands for My Daddy”.

Career

Early career experience was largely gained in military medicine, beginning as a Captain of Army Medical Corps in 1986 and graduating to Major in 1989. In 1990 he was deployed to Bahrain in 1990 during Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Shatz was the Hospital Unit Commander for the 47th Field Hospital from 1990-91. He received an Honorable Discharge from active duty in 1991, and was awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait, and Army Commendation Medal. He served in the US Army reserve until 1996.

Shatz served as a fellow in surgical critical care at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he went on to begin his professional career in both medicine and academia. He taught as professor of surgery and professor of anesthesiology during his time as a trauma surgeon with the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Noting value in a multi-faceted approach to healthcare and emergency response, Shatz dedicated time to Miami Dade Fire Rescue, and served as Assistant Medical Director for 12 years (1996 - 2008).[5]

Football became more than a hobby when Shatz was led the emergency surgery on Jerome McDougle after McDougle was shot in a Miami robbery days before Eagles 2005 training camp.[6] Shatz was also requested and served as Event Medical Director of Super Bowls XLI (Dolphin Stadium) and XLIV (SunLife Stadium) in Miami.

In 2008, Shatz moved from Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami to Sacramento, where he continued his work as a trauma surgeon and professor of surgery with the University of California, Davis. He also continued his involvement in emergency response, almost immediately beginning work with Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. He entered the position of Medical Director of Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District in 2012 and remains working with them to this day. In 2018, he picked up an additional position as Medical Director for California Fire and Rescue Training Authority.

Disaster Response

Early career experience as a doctor in a war zone prepared Shatz for his career start with South Florida’s Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force 1 in 1992 when he was elected as their Medical Director. He remained in that position as it changed from South Florida to Metro-Dade Florida Task Force 1, and accumulated 16 years of service before his departure to California in 2008.

During those 16 years, Shatz made history as the physician to have attended to the most national disasters of any at that time. His first deployment as FEMA Medical Team Manager was in 1995 to Oklahoma City following the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building Bombing. Later that year, he led a team in response to Hurricane Opal’s wreckage in October. In 1996, he led a medical team in San Juan, Puerto Rico in response to the Humberto Videl Rio Piedras Explosion.

In September of 2001, Shatz deployed as Medical Team Manager of Miami Dade Florida Task Force 1’s response to the World Trade Center Bombing. He remained in Manhattan for over a week, assisting the effort to search and recover victims of the terrorist attack. He was joined by a team of brave responders, and very good dogs. Shatz would return to New York City in 2020 in response to the early, lethal waves of COVID-19.[7]

Shatz wrapped up his career as Medical Team Manager with FEMA’s Florida Task Force 1 with a series of deployments in response to hurricanes. While the majority were in Florida, Hurricane Katrina called his efforts to New Orleans, Louisiana. He deployed in August 2005, hours after the storm passed over the city and had wrecked the most direct route over the westbound I-10 bridge from Mississippi. The caravan of trucks and heavy vehicles drove around Lake Pontchartrain and over the precarious Causeway Bridge to enter New Orleans from the north, via Metairie. They set up their tent stations around the Saint’s Training Facility in Jefferson Parish, and began their search and rescue work on the west side of New Orleans and moved east. Shatz and his team worked primarily from boats with the Coast Guard.[8]

Shatz now uses his extensive experience with medical care and disaster response in various consulting and capacity building positions for health professionals and civilians alike. He continues to conduct and publish research on both emergency response and the spleen.
