The murder of Daena Walsh occurred on 2 August 2024 in Midleton, County Cork, Ireland. Daena Walsh, a 27-year-old mother of two, was fatally stabbed in the apartment she shared with her partner, 31-year-old Adam Corcoran. Following the assault, the apartment was set on fire. In March 2026, Corcoran was found guilty of murder and arson and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Background

edit

Daena Walsh was originally from Roundwood, County Wicklow. She was a mother to two young sons. At the time of her death, she was living in an apartment at John Barry House on Connolly Street in Midleton, County Cork.[1]

Walsh was in a relationship with Adam Corcoran, a native of Ballincollig, County Cork. The couple shared the Midleton apartment where the killing took place. Family members later described Walsh as a woman who "meant everything to her children" and noted that she should have been there to raise them. [2]

Attack on Walsh

edit

On the afternoon of 2 August 2024, emergency services were alerted to a fire at the John Barry House apartments in Midleton. Upon arrival, Gardaí and fire services discovered Walsh's body inside the smoke-filled apartment. She had sustained multiple stab wounds.

The attack was described by the prosecution as a "conscious, violent act" carried out with "no mercy." Following the fatal stabbing, Corcoran set fire to the premises. Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene, and Corcoran was subsequently arrested and charged with both murder and arson.[3]

Trial

edit

The trial of Adam Corcoran took place at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork in early 2026. Corcoran pleaded not guilty to the murder of Walsh and not guilty to the charge of arson.

During the trial, the jury heard evidence regarding the "horrific" nature of Walsh's injuries. The prosecution argued that the killing was a savage act of domestic violence. In March 2026, the jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty on both the murder and arson counts.

On 19 March 2026, Ms. Justice Siobhan Lankford sentenced Corcoran to the mandatory term of life imprisonment. During sentencing, Justice Lankford described Corcoran’s actions as "truly horrific" and "demonic." [2]

Aftermath

Family statement

edit

Following the sentencing, Walsh's brother, Callum Walsh, spoke outside the court on behalf of the family. He described the killing as "not just cruel, it was savage," stating that the family's grief remained "as raw as ever." He emphasized the impact on Walsh’s two young sons, who were left without their mother.

Community response

edit

The murder of Daena Walsh sparked significant local mourning in both Midleton and her hometown of Roundwood. Her death was cited in broader national discussions regarding the epidemic of femicide and domestic violence in Ireland, coming in the wake of other high-profile cases such as those of Nadine Lott and Ashling Murphy.
