San Bernardino attack representation

edit

Following the December 2015 San Bernardino attack, Abuershaid was one of two attorneys who represented the family of perpetrator Syed Rizwan Farook.[1] He spoke to news media about the family, describing the home life of Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik and stating that there was no indication the couple held extremist views.[1][5]

Defamation lawsuit against Orange County

edit

Beginning in 2021, Abuershaid pursued a legal claim and subsequent lawsuit against Orange County, alleging that Gary LoGalbo, a former senior official in the Orange County District Attorney's Office, had repeatedly referred to him as a "terrorist" while LoGalbo discussed cases Abuershaid was handling as a public defender.[4][2] The matter drew further attention in 2022 when Orange County Superior Court Judge Derek W. Hunt recused himself from the case after making remarks that Abuershaid's attorney characterized as biased.[6] In 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that his racial harassment claim remained pending after the county settled related sexual harassment lawsuits.[7]

Anaheim jewelry store case

edit

In July 2025, Abuershaid represented the owner of Al-Amira Jewelry in Anaheim after the owner fired a warning shot to deter an attempted smash-and-grab robbery. Speaking to news outlets, Abuershaid said his client had acted in self-defense.[8]
