Kirby character

In-universe information
OccupationJester

Marx (Japanese: マルクス, Hepburn: Marukusu) is a major character in HAL Laboratory's Kirby franchise. He debuted as the main antagonist of Kirby Super Star’s Milky Way Wishes mode and its remake. He has since appeared in many subsequent entries as either a boss or playable character. Marx also appears in several Kirby manga, and appears as a boss in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In the games, Marx initially serves as a friendly ally to Kirby, who warns him about the dangers of the sun and moon fighting, and encourages Kirby to go ask the Galactic Nova for help in order to stop the fight, with Marx wishing him good luck.

When Kirby reaches Galactic Nova and is about to ask for a wish, Marx pushes Kirby away at the last second, with him telling Galactic Nova that he wants world domination of Planet Popstar. Galactic Nova grants Marx his wish, which transforms Marx into a fearsome monster resembling a bat.

Marx has received positive reception from critics, with many of them praising that the final boss fight against him was one of the most memorable fights in any SNES game. His ultimate form in Kirby Super Star Ultra known as Marx Soul, has also gained significant attention from critics, noting him as one of the scariest video game characters.

Concept and creation

edit

While Marx initially seems like an innocent and friendly jester, he is actually very cunning and manipulative, and successfully used Kirby to his advantage by luring him into his trap so he could gain power.[1] Marx has a pink body which resembles Kirby, but has much bigger eyes, as well as a blue and red jester hat, brown jester boots, and a red bow tie.[citation needed] His true form keeps his regular appearance, but adds some golden bat-like wings with several flashy colors resembling mirrors underneath the wings.[citation needed] His design as Marx Soul changes the color of his body to purple, the color of his wings to red, and gives him a gold chain and some fangs.[citation needed] Unlike most of the other Kirby villains who do redeem themselves, Marx is one of the few to truly remain consistently evil throughout the series.

Appearances

edit

Marx first appeared in the SNES game Kirby Super Star in the Milky Way Wishes mode of the game.[2] He tells Kirby about the dangers of the Sun and Moon fighting, and advices him to go ask the Galactic Nova for help.[3] When Kirby finally reaches Nova and is about to ask for his wish, Marx knocks Kirby away before he can, and makes his own selfish wish — to take complete control of Popstar. After this happens, Marx transforms into his true form. Marx reveals that he tricked the sun and moon into fighting each other, as well as tricking Kirby into summoning Nova, in a master plan to conquer Popstar and cause as much mischief as he wants.[4] In Kirby Super Star Ultra, a clip shown towards the end of The True Arena mode reveals that after he was defeated in the events of Milky Way Wishes, his body had begun to absorb the dispersed energy and scattered pieces of Nova, not only reviving him but also transforming him into the even stronger Marx Soul. After a series of battles against Kirby's toughest enemies, Marx Soul appears in a colorful but dark and distorted dimension as the final foe.[5]

After Kirby Super Star and its remake, Marx appeared exclusively as cameos or references,[5] before finally returning in Kirby Star Allies as a playable Dream Friend, which was added in the first update of the game.[6] According to the game's Flavor Text, Marx somehow survived the crash into Nova in Milky Way Wishes and sensed danger from afar, coming to Kirby's aid despite their past history, in order to stop the threat looming over the galaxy.[7] Marx's moveset uses most of his attacks from his boss fights. On the ground, he is in his jester form, using his ball to roll around and attack, while in mid-air he unleashes his true form.[8]

In spin-off games, Marx appears in Kirby Mass Attack as the final boss of the Kirby Brawlball mode,[citation needed] and also appears as a playable character in Kirby Air Riders.[9]

Marx also appears as a boss in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he retains most of his attacks from Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra.[5] He also appears in the game as a spirit, which can be enhanced into his true form, as well as his hat as a wearable headgear for Mii Fighters.[5]

Other appearances

edit

Marx appears in the Kirby of the Stars! Moretsu Pupupu Hour! manga written by Asami Taniguchi and published by Shogakukan. In this manga, he is written to be a much more insane and demented planet destroyer.

Reception

edit

Several gaming publications and lists rank Marx among the best Kirby characters and villains.[10][11][12][13][14][15] Additionally, Marx (specifically his Soul form) has been ranked among the creepiest Kirby bosses and gaming bosses in general.[16][17][18] Inside Games writer Sushi praised the scene of Marx exploding onto Galactic Nova, stating that it creates an emotional impact that simply cannot be fully conveyed through still images alone.[19] Marley Hughes of Comic Book Resources heavily praised the battle against Marx in Kirby Super Star, referring to it as the most epic boss in Kirby's history, and stating that the battle rivals other SNES final bosses such as Mother Brain from Super Metroid and Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI.[20] Chris Carter of Destructoid felt excited to see Marx added as a playable character in Kirby Star Allies, commenting that he looks fun to play, and motivating him to do another playthrough of the game.[21]
