Marti Buckley is an American author, journalist, and culinary writer known for her work on Basque and Spanish cuisine.[1][2]
Early Life and Education
editBuckley was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised across the southern United States.[3] She graduated from Homewood High School in 2002 and earned a bachelor's degree in English from Louisiana State University in 2006. During her undergraduate studies, she spent a semester abroad in Pamplona, Spain.[4]
Career
editBuckley began her professional career at Southern Living magazine and later worked as a line cook under chef Frank Stitt in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2010, she relocated to San Sebastián, Spain, where she began focusing on the culinary traditions of the Basque Country.
Her first cookbook, Basque Country: A Culinary Journey Through a Food Lover’s Paradise (Artisan, 2018), received the 2019 International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Award in the International category. The book was also recognized by the Basque Gastronomy Academy as the best publication of the year.[5][6]
In 2024, she published The Book of Pintxos (Artisan), a collection of over 100 recipes from Basque chefs and home cooks. The book has also been released in Spanish (Todo sobre los pintxos) and German (Das Buch Pintxos).[7][8]
Buckley is the host of Rioja Paired, a documentary series that explores food and wine culture in Spain's Rioja region. In 2025, she appeared in the San Sebastián episode of CNN’s Searching for Spain with Eva Longoria, where she introduced Longoria to Basque pintxos culture and wood-fired grilling traditions.[9][10]
