Marco Yitzhak Funez

Marco Yitzhak Funez (born December 24), also known professionally as Marco Yitzhak Funez-Ponce, is a Honduran-American behavioral health researcher, clinical psychology professional, and independent musician based in Florida. He is known for his academic research on clinical decision-making models regarding substance use screening, as well as his alternative rock project, To Misuse.

Early life and education

Funez is of Honduran descent. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of South Florida (USF), where he was a recipient of the USF Latino Scholarship, awarded through the Sheriff's Hispanic Advisory Council (SHAC). He later attended the University of Florida (UF), where he earned a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology. During his time at UF, his academic focus centered on behavioral medicine, pain psychology, and patient decision-making processes.

Academic career and research

Funez's research primarily investigates clinical judgment, healthcare decision-making models, and systemic healthcare disparities, particularly within Hispanic and Latino populations. His graduate research utilized Brunswikian lens modeling and behavioral vignettes to simulate clinical environments. His prominent work, Understanding Medical and Dental Trainee Decision Making in Alcohol Screening: A Lens Model Vignette Investigation, examined how future medical and dental providers evaluate alcohol use and binge drinking risks during routine patient screenings. His findings sought to isolate the underlying cognitive and demographic factors contributing to treatment disparities in clinical settings. During his research career, he has been affiliated with the UF Department of Clinical and Health Psychology and collaborated with researchers associated with the UF Center for Pain Research and Behavioral Health.

Musical career

Under the stage moniker To Misuse, Funez operates a solo reverb rock, indie, and alternative rock music project based out of Tampa, Florida. The project is characterized by atmospheric, guitar-driven arrangements and minimalist indie production. After distributing early demos and singles independently across streaming platforms such as To Misuse on Spotify and Apple Music, To Misuse announced the release of a debut EP titled Rehabilitation (Demos), scheduled for release on July 17, 2026. According to promotional materials, the four-track project explores themes of introspection and personal recovery written over a two-year period.
