Comment: This draft is written from the viewpoint of the person who is the subject of the draft, focusing on what the subject or their employer says about them. Biographical notability is based on what independent reliable sources have written about the subject. This draft does not establish biographical notability. See also Wikipedia is not for resumes. You may ask for advice about biographical notability at the Teahouse. Notably, there are a lot of interview sources (see WP:INTERVIEW) and § Influences feels like puffery and notebomb-y with the previous concerns. Bobby Cohn 🍁 (talk) 17:25, 12 February 2026 (UTC)

Magdalena Blažević (born 1982) is a Bosnian writer. She is best known for her short story collection Svetkovina (Celebration, 2020) and her novels U kasno ljeto (In Late Summer, 2022) and Sezona berbe (Harvest Season, 2023). Her work has won multiple awards, including the 2022/2023 Tportal Award for Best Croatian Novel and the 2023 Kočićevo pero award, and has been translated into English, Russian, and Macedonian.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
editBlažević was born in Žepče, a small town in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1982.[4] She studied Croatian English Language and Literature at the University of Mostar, completing a postgraduate degree.[5] She currently lives and works in Mostar.[6]
Career
editBlažević began her career as a literary critic.[4] Her short stories were subsequently published in literary magazines and portals including Balkanski književni glasnik, Rijeci, Život, Ajfelov most, Strane, and Astronaut.[7]
Her first short-story collection, Svetkovina, was published in 2020. The collection consists of 25 stories and focuses on women’s lives in rural communities, addressing themes including domestic violence, poverty, patriarchy, desire, and social expectations.[8]
Her first novella, U kasno ljeto (In Late Summer), was published in 2022 by Fraktura. It was awarded the 2022/2023 Tportal Award for Best Croatian Novel and the 2023 Kočićevo pero award.[1][9] The English translation by Anđelka Raguž, titled In Late Summer, published in 2025 by Linden Editions, was also shortlisted for the 2026 Dublin Literary Award and the 2026 EBRD Literature Prize, which celebrates the work of writers and translators. [10][11][12] Based on personal experience, the novel is narrated by a fourteen-year-old girl killed during an attack on the village of Kiseljak during the Bosnian War, and takes place in the aftermath of the event. [10][13] Focusing on the effects of war on ordinary lives, the novel recounts Ivana's memories from the soldiers' first appearance in her village when she was 4-years-old to her spectral observations of her family following her death. The book has additionally been translated into French, Catalan, Italian, Macedonian and Slovenian.[6]
Her second novel, Sezona berbe (Harvest Season), was published in 2023 by Fraktura, and has been translated into Catalan.[6] The novel is structured in three parts and follows the perspectives of a photographer named Una and her mother Ida.[14] It was shortlisted for the Tportal Award for Best Croatian Novel in 2024.[14]
Her fourth book, Vučja kuća: I druge proze, (Wolf's House: And Other Prose), is a collection of short stories set in small, patriarchal communities in Bosnia.[15] It was published in 2025 by Fraktura.[16][17]
Themes and Influences
editBlažević’s work frequently addresses women’s experiences, intergenerational memory, and the legacy of war.[4][18] In interviews, she has cited writers Herta Müller, Italo Calvino, Jenny Erpenbeck, and Anne Carson as influences.[4]
