The Lort Smith-Lyle Hospital for Sick and Injured Animals opened in North Melbourne in April 1936 - founded by friends and animal advocates Louisa Lort Smith and Lady Frances Lyle. Lort Smith and friends prior to this had formed the Melbourne’s Animal Welfare League Australia[1] in 1927 - and it was through this work that in 1929, with the support of veterinarian Dr Bordeaux, a veterinary clinic for poor people (originally run by The University of Melbourne but forced to close due to a lack of students and the depression) was lunched.

Today Lort Smith[2] continues to run as a charity, with its animal hospital still operating on the original site, as well as an animal shelter/adoption centre located in Campbellfield and a Pet Therapy Volunteer program which supports a range of organisations across Melbourne.
