Lorli D. Villanueva (born June 3, 1946) is a Filipino actress, theater director, educator, and author[1]. She is an alumna of the then Baguio Colleges Foundation, now the University of the Cordilleras, where she graduated in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in English [1]. Born and raised in Iloilo, her passion for the arts blossomed early, paving the way for a multi-faceted career that would bridge Philippine media and American academia[2].

Career

edit

Lorli began her career in theater as a founding member of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) in 1967 under the mentorship of Cecile Guidote Alvarez after completing an Integrated Arts Program with UNESCO. She went on to build a prominent career in Philippine theater, television, and film spanning more than five decades, appearing in over 50 films and taking lead roles in several television shows alongside numerous guest appearances[1][3]. Audiences warmly remember her roles in classic films like Lilet and Oro, Plata, Mata, as well as her iconic comedic pairing with Subas Herrero in commercial advertisements[2][3].

She later transitioned to television directing, producing historical and educational programs for commercial networks and the Department of Education, and directed the long-running television soap opera Flor de Luna[1][3]. Lorli eventually established Tri-Media Productions, later renamed Emmaus Productions, where she served as President and Chief Executive Officer[4]. The company became active in public relations, advertising, talent management, and production, producing theater shows, educational materials, and training programs for emerging theater groups in the Philippines and abroad—including Australia, Japan, and Korea—often with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts[1].

Awards and Accomplishments

edit

Throughout her career, Lorli has received several distinctions for her contributions to the arts and education. She won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Manila Film Festival in 1972 for her performance in Lilet and received multiple nominations from various award-giving bodies, including the First International Film Festival in the Philippines[1]. Beyond performing, she has contributed to the literary arts, notably serving as the Chairman of the Board of Judges for the prestigious Palanca Literary Awards[1]. Later in life, she channeled her decades of experience into writing, publishing books such as Dancing with the Dictator to share her personal and historical insights[5].

In addition to her work in the performing arts, Lorli has had an extensive career in education. She is a Fulbright Scholar and studied at Northern Illinois University, where she later served as an adjunct professor in the Communications Department[1]. She taught at the Philippine Science High School and later held academic positions at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay and the University of the Philippines[1].

After migrating to the United States and settling in New York, she became a certified New York State teacher and conducted review classes for teachers preparing for state licensure examinations[1][6]. She became a pillar of the Filipino-American community in New York, frequently organizing cultural gatherings and reminiscent events for the diaspora [6]. She later served at the Touro College and University System in New York City as the Deputy Chair of the Graduate Program for Education and Special Education, as well as an International Student Advisor[1]. For her enduring dedication to community welfare and artistic brilliance, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by OZA for Humanitarian Causes Through the Arts[1].
