Liam Kingsley Larkan (born 10 October 1998), often known by his nickname "Larky", is an international rugby union player who plays as a hooker for Johannesburg-based Pirates Rugby Club and the Zimbabwe national rugby union team (the Sables). Standing at 1.81 metres and weighing 110 kg, he is widely recognized for his high work rate, physical tackling, and ability to secure defensive breakdowns.[1]

Early life

edit

Larkan was born on 10 October 1998. He addressed the South African College Schools (SACS) in Cape Town, where his rugby career began to take shape. During his time at SACS, his performances earned him selections for the Western Province regional youth age-grade rugby systems, culminating in an appearance at the Under-18 Craven Week tournament cycle.

Club career

edit

Larkan transitioned to senior club rugby through the Stellenbosch pipeline, subsequently joining the Cape Town-based club False Bay RFC, where he played a pivotal role in capturing regional league titles. He also briefly played for the Cape Town Wild Dogs franchise. Seeking further professional development, Larkan later relocated to Johannesburg to sign with the top-tier Pirates Rugby Club. Outside of the traditional domestic seasons, he was selected to represent the Goshawks representative provincial team during the regional Mzansi Challenge tournaments.[2]

International career

edit

Larkan made his senior international test debut for the Zimbabwe Sables in 2022. He quickly cemented himself as a consistent front-row anchor within the squad, featuring prominently in back-to-back title victories at the Rugby Africa Cup tournaments in 2024 and 2025. His contributions in the front row heavily supported the Sables in successfully clinching their historic qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. In July 2026, he was named to the starting line-up by Sables Head Coach Pieter Benade for the high-profile World Rugby Nations Cup tournament in the United States.[3]
