Draft:Lalmba Association

History

edit

Lalmba was established in Keren, Eritrea, in 1963. During the 1970s and 1980s, the organization extended its work to Sudan before establishing programs in Kenya in 1984 and in Ethiopia in 1998.

In 1996, Hugh and Marty Downey published On Heart's Edge, an account of the organization's founding and early years.[1]

Programs and Operations

edit

Lalmba operates two medical facilities in Migori County, Kenya -- the Matoso Clinic and the Ochuna Dispensary -- along with a children's home in Ongoro. In Ethiopia, the organization operates the Agaro Bushi Medium Clinic in a remote region in the Keffa Zone and a children's home in the town of Chiri also in Keffa.

The organization's Reaching Children at Risk (RCAR) program supports approximately 1,200 children annually from vulnerable households across both countries.

In June 2025, Lalmba opened the Matoso Education and Empowerment Center (MEEC), a community facility in Matoso, Kenya, offering digital literacy training and vocational education.[2]

Programs are staffed primarily by locally recruited national staff, with periodic support from international volunteers who focus on mentoring and coaching.

Recognition and Media Coverage

edit

Lalmba has received media attention from local Colorado outlets, including Denver Catholic[3] and KRDO[2], for its longstanding humanitarian work in Africa. It is listed in international NGO directories such as Guidestar, Idealist, and the Union of International Associations. Historical references to Lalmba's work can be found in archives from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.[4]

In 1996, The founders, Hugh and Marty Downey published a book about Lalmba called On Heart's Edge.[1]
