Kulturmagasinet in 2009

Kulturmagasinet is a culture center in Sundsvall, Sweden, that houses the city library, museum and venues.

History and architecture

edit

After the city fire of 1888, seven storage magazines were erected close to the port. They fell out of use, and in the 1970s, there were calls to demolish them. In the end, five were kept, and a group of four were transformed into Kulturmagasinet by building a three-layer glass roof between them. It was inaugurated in November 1986, and won the Europa Nostra award the following year. The total cost was more than 100 million SEK.[1]

Functions

edit

The western half of Kulturmagasinet contains the city library, while the eastern half houses the museum and a cafe. In the very centre, there is a square named after local author Lars Ahlin, which is a popular site for musical performances. The adjoining Programsalen lecture hall seats 70 people.
