Kudzai Weston Mashawi (born 7 January 1993), frequently known by his squad nickname "Gudo", is a professional Zimbabwean international rugby union player who plays as a centre for Harare Sports Club and serves as a primary senior leader for the Zimbabwe national rugby union team (the Sables). Standing at 1.78 metres and weighing 93 kg, his robust midfield stature, tactical defensive communication, and hard-running carrying lines have made him a mainstay in the national team backline for over a decade.[1]

Early life

edit

Mashawi was born on 7 January 1993 in Harare, Zimbabwe. He attended Churchill Boys High School from 2008 to 2012, where his physical rugby profile began developing within the prominent local schoolboy rugby structures. He subsequently pursued higher education at the Sharks Academy in South Africa in 2013, later completing professional certifications at the Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE).

Club career

edit

Mashawi commenced his senior domestic club career with top-tier Harare side Harare Sports Club in 2013. In 2014, he played briefly for regional side Jaguars RFC. To secure professional pathway experience, Mashawi was selected to join the national high-performance program, representing the Zimbabwe Academy squad during their competitive fixtures in the 2019 SuperSport Rugby Challenge cycle. Concurrently, he featured for South African provincial select sides, including the Sharks Club XV amateur team and the KZN Wildebeest selectors.

International career

edit

Mashawi rose through the junior representative systems, playing for the Zimbabwe Under-20 side before making his senior test debut for the Zimbabwe Sables in 2015. He also transitioned effectively into the shorter format, captaining the national sevens team, the Cheetahs, during elite international tournament circuits, including the 2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series windows in Dubai and Cape Town.

As a veteran midfield presence, Mashawi eventually earned the appointment of vice-captain for the Sables' senior squad. He played an instrumental part in anchoring the backline during Zimbabwe's historic continental title triumphs, helping clear the qualification pathway for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. In June 2026, Head Coach Pieter Benade selected him for the traveling 33-man national team roster participating in the high-stakes World Rugby Nations Cup tournament in the United States.[1]
