Karen Lucas is a British human geographer specialising in transport poverty, mobility justice, and social exclusion. She is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Manchester and Director of Research within the School of Environment, Education and Development.[1]

Academic career

Lucas joined the University of Manchester in 2020 as Professor of Human Geography.[1] She previously held academic positions at the University of Leeds, the University of Oxford, and the University of Westminster.

Research

Lucas’s research focuses on transport poverty and social exclusion, examining how transport systems affect access to employment, education, and essential services.

She contributed to the UK Government’s Making the Connections: Final Report on Transport and Social Exclusion (2003), which analysed the relationship between transport accessibility and social exclusion.[2]

Lucas has appeared as an expert commentator on transport policy and urban mobility debates, including on BBC Radio 4’s Rare Earth programme.[3]

In 2023, she was interviewed by Urban Matters Journal on issues relating to transport poverty and inclusive mobility policy.[4]
