Kailash Picture Company is an Indian filmmaking and advertising company headquartered in Mumbai, India. Founded by filmmaker and director Kailash Surendranath and producer Aarti Gupta Surendranath, the company formalised its operations in 1999. The company is known for its work in advertising films, public service campaigns, national integration films, and production services for domestic and international brands.[1]

History

Kailash Surendranath, the founder of Kailash Picture Company Pvt. Ltd., started his career at the age of 17. In his initial years of filmmaking, Surendranath produced several short films and advertising projects and had made around 30 advertisement films, including national integration films. His earliest notable work was Sita Aur Saleem, produced for the Films Division of India and released in cinemas nationwide during the 1970s.[2][3]

Over the following decades, Surendranath established himself as an advertising filmmaker, directing thousands of television commercials as well as several national integration films such as Spread the Light of Freedom, the widely recognised Mile Sur Mera Tumhara and Desh Raag which became important cultural pieces in the history of Indian Media and Television. Produced for Doordarshan’s Lok Seva Sanchaar Parishad between 1987 and 1989, to create a sense of unity and national pride among Indians during a critical post-independence period.[4][5]

Kailash Picture Company provided production services for the Hindi romantic film Love You Hamesha (2001), directed by Kailash Surendranath. The film was financed and distributed by Cee (I) TV Entertainment and producer Ashok Amritraj. It featured Akshaye Khanna and Sonali Bendre and had a delayed theatrical release.[6]

Kailash Picture Company served as a production company on Code 46 (2003), a British science fiction film directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton, alongside BBC Film, Revolution Films, and the UK Film Council. The company subsequently provided line production services for Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart (2007), a Paramount Vantage film starring Angelina Jolie, with Aarti Gupta Surendranath serving as line producer for the India-based shoot, which recreated Karachi locations in Mumbai and Pune.[7]

In 2010, the original film Mile Sur Mera Tumhara had a remake, its updated version Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara was launched to commemorate India’s 60th Republic Day. It was directed by Kailash Surendranath and produced by Aarti Gupta Surendranath under Kailash Picture Company Pvt. Ltd. The film was commissioned by The Times of India Group, aired exclusively on Zoom TV and Launched by Amitabh Bachhan.[8][9]

Har Ghar Tiranga was directed by Kailash Surendranath and co-directed by Angadveer Surendranath in 2022. Aarti Gupta Surendranath was the producer of the campaign. This national integration film was created for the Government of India, commemorating 75 years of Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav) under the Ministry of Culture and production by Kailash Picture Company Pvt Ltd.[10][11]
