Justin Tiwald (Chinese: 田史丹; born 1974) is a scholar who works on the history of Chinese philosophy, Professor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong, and co-host of the podcast series, This Is the Way.

Biography

Tiwald was born in the United States, in the city of Omaha, Nebraska, and grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. His parents are Barbara and William Tiwald and his sister is Jessica Ratcliff. He earned his undergraduate degree from Carleton College in 1997 and completed his PhD at the University of Chicago in 2006. He is married to artist and clinical therapist Melanie Dorson.

From 2006 to 2022, he was a professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University. From 2022 onward, he has been a professor of philosophy at The University of Hong Kong. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley and Santa Clara University, and as a Rockefeller Fellow at Princeton University.

In January of 2024, Tiwald and Loyola University of Chicago philosophy professor Richard Kim launched This Is the Way, a podcast on Chinese philosophy.
