The Journal for Religion, Film and Media (abbreviated to JRFM) is an international open-access journal published twice a year, which publishes academic articles in English on the interaction between religions and various media, including films, documentaries, advertising and digital platforms.
History
editJRFM was founded in 2013 based on an idea by Christian Wessely (University of Graz) and Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich), with the aim of creating a space for interdisciplinary discussion within the fields of media and religious studies in Europe and internationally.
The first issue was published in November 2015.
Since then, Bärbel Beinhauer-Köhler, Anna-Katharina Höpflinger, Stefanie Knauss, Marie-Therese Mäder, Alexander D. Ornella, Davide Zordan, Philippe Bornet and Natalie Fritz have also joined the editorial team.
Topics
editThe JRFM journal publishes academic articles dedicated to the study of the relationship between media and religion across different cultures and historical periods. The articles analyse theories and research methods and explore the role of cinema, television, the internet, art, music and other media in the representation and interpretation of religious phenomena. Particular attention is also paid to the online dissemination of visual and audiovisual content.
The journal is published biannually, with two issues released each year in May and November; each issue is completed with a thematic section, an open section and a section dedicated to reviews of multimedia products.
Publication policy and distribution
editThe journal is published biannually, with two issues released each year in May and November; each issue comprises a thematic section, an open section and a section dedicated to reviews of multimedia products.
Prior to publication, every article undergoes a double-blind peer review. JRFM is then published online in open access format with the option of print-on-demand, in collaboration with the publisher Schüren Verlag in Marburg.
The journal requires that all contributions adhere to the principles of good scientific practice. Authors are also invited to declare any use of large language models (LLMs) in the design or drafting of articles, in order to ensure their originality and transparency in the use of artificial intelligence tools.
