The Jones County News is a weekly newspaper published in Gray, the county seat of Jones County, Georgia, United States. Founded in 1895, it is the newspaper of record for Jones County and has been published continuously for more than 125 years.[1][2] The newspaper is owned by Smith Communications, Inc., an Eatonton-based publishing company.[3]
History
editThe Jones County News began publication in 1895 in Gray, Georgia. The earliest surviving issue held by the Library of Congress is Vol. 1, No. 5, dated February 7, 1895, and the paper was originally published by M.C. Greene.[1][4] Historic issues are preserved on microfilm at the University of Georgia Libraries and have been digitized as part of the Georgia Newspaper Project, with funding for digitization provided by the R.J. Taylor, Jr. Foundation.[2]
For most of its history, the newspaper was owned by a succession of local families and remained independent of corporate ownership.[5] Late in the paper's history it was operated by publisher Josh W. Lurie and editor Debbie Lurie-Smith of Gray.[5] The publication is currently part of the Smith Communications, Inc. group, joining The Eatonton Messenger, Lake Oconee News, and The Baldwin Bulletin as the company's four weekly newspapers.[3]
Operations
editThe newspaper is published every Wednesday and covers local news, government, sports, obituaries, public notices, and community events in Jones County and the city of Gray.[6] Editorial offices are located at 102 Stewart Avenue in downtown Gray, adjacent to the W.E. Knox Civic Center.[7] The paper offers a print edition, an electronic edition (e-Edition), and an associated lifestyle magazine, Jones Living.[6]
Debbie Lurie-Smith serves as editor of the publication.[7] Recurring sections include news, sports, community calendar, obituaries, classifieds, public notices, and county records such as marriage licenses, building permits, jail reports, and traffic citations.[6]
Ownership
editSmith Communications, Inc. is a multi-generational publishing company headquartered in Eatonton, Georgia, owned by A. Mark Smith Sr. The company began with the 1956 acquisition of The Eatonton Messenger and has since grown to publish four weekly newspapers, including The Jones County News, along with several regional magazines.[3]
