Johan Hans Hegg is the vocalist of the Swedish viking-themed death metal-band Amon Amarth. He joined the band in 1992 when the band was still using the name Scum.[1][2]
Hegg is recognized for his deep growled vocal style and for lyrics centered on Norse mythology, Viking history, and Scandinavian folklore. In addition to his music career, he is a co-founder of the Swedish Viking heritage company Grimfrost.[3]
Career
editScum and the formation of Amon Amarth
editHegg joined the Swedish death metal band Scum in 1992 after the departure of original vocalist Paul "Themgoroth" Mäkitalo. The band had formed in 1988 and underwent several lineup changes before adopting the name Amon Amarth later that year, inspired by the Sindarin name for Mount Doom from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium.
With Hegg as vocalist, Amon Amarth recorded the demo Thor Arise (1993), followed by The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter (1994) and the EP Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds (1996). These releases established the band's melodic death metal sound and lyrical focus on Norse mythology and Viking history.
Amon Amarth
editSince the early-1990s, Hegg has remained the only vocalist in Amon Amarth. The band achieved international recognition through albums including Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998), Versus the World (2002), Fate of Norns (2004), Twilight of the Thunder God (2008), Deceiver of the Gods (2013), Jomsviking (2016), Berserker (2019), and The Great Heathen Army (2022).
Although Amon Amarth is frequently described as a Viking metal band due to its lyrical themes, Hegg has stated that the group considers itself a melodic death metal band rather than part of the Viking metal genre.[4][5]
Grimfrost
editIn 2014, Hegg became one of the co-founders of Grimfrost, a Swedish company specializing in historically inspired Viking-age reproductions, modern Nordic products, educational content, and publishing.[6] Within the company, Hegg has contributed creative direction, writing, and brand development while continuing his career with Amon Amarth. He has also been involved with Grimfrost Records, serving in a leadership role for the label.
Personal life
editHegg is married to Maria Rizell Hegg and resides in Sweden. Outside of music, he has maintained a long-standing interest in Norse history, archaeology, and Scandinavian cultural heritage, interests that have influenced both his songwriting and his work with Grimfrost.
