Jochen M. Wilms (born 1960) is a German business executive, investor, and music and art project producer. He has held management positions at Bertelsmann and Schüco. He is the founder and managing director of W Ventures GmbH, a venture capital firm. In addition to his business career, he has worked on cultural production projects in music, film, and contemporary art, including Toast to Freedom, Electric Burma – The Concert for Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Art 19 initiative.
Business career
editFrom 1992 to 2002, Wilms served as a general manager at Bertelsmann.[1] He held senior executive positions at Schüco International KG from 2002 to 2010.[1]
Wilms later became an entrepreneurial investor and established W Ventures GmbH in 2014, a venture capital firm.[2]
After his initial investment in 2016 with the 3i Group, he subsequently served as Chief Executive Officer of Luqom Group, a company operating in the digital lighting and e-commerce sector, before transitioning to a chairman position following the appointment of a successor.[3][4][5][6]
In 2021, Wilms served as interim executive board member for marketing and sales at Dornbracht before transitioning to a supervisory board position as an investor after the appointment of a successor.[7][8]
Cultural activities
editWilms has worked on music, film, and human rights projects since the 1990s.[9] He collaborated with artists including Amy Helm, Levon Helm, Carl Carlton, Tony Braunagel, Moguai, Anti-Flag, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and supported initiatives associated with Amnesty International.[9]
Wilms co-produced Toast to Freedom, a song marking the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.[1][9][10][11] In 2010, he partnered with Bill Shipsey and Carl Carlton to create a commemorative song for the anniversary.[12][13][14] The recording featured contributions from nearly 50 artists, including Donald Fagen, Angelique Kidjo, Jane Birkin, Marianne Faithfull, Carly Simon, Kris Kristofferson, and Ewan McGregor.[11][15] Toast To Freedom was recorded at Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, New York, and released on 3 May 2012 on The Jay Leno Show.[12][16][17]
Wilms co-produced Electric Burma – The Concert for Aung San Suu Kyi, a concert and documentary film project held in Dublin.[9][18] The production featured artists including Bono, Bob Geldof, Damien Rice, and Angélique Kidjo.[18] It was released as both a live event and a film.[18]
Wilms co-founded Art 19 in 2019 with Mike Karstens, Burkhard Richter, and Bill Shipsey.[19][20] The organization produces art projects to support human rights fundraising, and its name references Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.[21]
Art 19 collaborated with Amnesty International on fundraising initiatives. Its project Box One, which included works by William Kentridge, Shirin Neshat, Yoko Ono, Gerhard Richter, and others, was exhibited in Berlin, Prague, Paris, and Geneva and presented at various art fairs.[19][21]
Public speaking
editWilms spoke at conferences on digital transformation in industry, including digitalization, platform-based business models, industrial technology, smart buildings, and the Internet of Things.[22][23][24][25][26][27]
He spoke at events including the NOAH Conference,[28] the International Wood Construction Forum,[29] and the Euroforum “Rethinking Real Estate” conference.[30]
