Jitank Singh Gurjar (born 31 October) is an Indian filmmaker and theatre artist. He is known for his debut feature film Vimukt (international title In Search of the Sky), which premiered in the Centrepiece programme at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.[1] The film later won the NETPAC Award at the festival.[2][3]
His earlier film Baasan (2023) was screened in the Indian Panorama (Non-Feature) section at the 54th International Film Festival of India.[4]
Early life and background
editGurjar was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Raised in a rural environment, his work is influenced by village life, folklore, silence-driven narratives, and lived social realities. Before working in cinema, he was actively involved in theatre, particularly in naturalistic and physical performance traditions.
Career
editGurjar transitioned from theatre to filmmaking with a focus on minimal dialogue, observational realism, and culturally grounded narratives.
His debut feature Vimukt received national and international media attention following its premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.[5] The film was also covered by national media highlighting its international recognition.[6]
