The Indian Society for Universal Dialogue[1][2][3][4] is a student's society at the School of Excellence in Law, Chennai affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. The ISUD borrows inspiration from the prestigious Oxford Union, a students’ society established at the University of Oxford in 1823.

The ISUD was established by students of the School of Excellence in Law with the aim of fostering a culture of debate and dialogue of contemporary ideas and issues that broadly concern various themes.

The India@100 Series

Conversation on the "Architects of India's Constitution"

The India@100 Series[1][3] was established by the Society "to engage in a comprehensive exploration of India's journey" over 100 years of its independence. The programme hosts a series of dialogues, debates, conversations, literature on themes that have shaped India.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court was featured in one of the notable conversations of the India@100 Series in April 2024. Mr. V. Sriram a noted Author and Historian was also featured in a lecture on the Legal History of Madras.

In December 2024, the ISUD organised a panel discussion on "The Idea of Gender Justice in India"[5] featuring prominent members of the Bar and Bench of the Madras High Court, Justices Prabha Sridevan, PT Asha, N Anand Venkatesh and Sriram Panchu, Senior Advocate. The conversation was moderated by Dr. Swarna Rajagopalan, Founder of the Prajnya Trust.

In January 2025, a conversation on "The Architects of India's Constitution" featuring the living descendants of the members of the erstwhile Constituent Assembly of India (1946-1949) was organised under the India@100 Series. The conversation featured Geeta Doctor, a Senior Journalist who shared personal anecdotes of her father Shri KV Padmanabhan who then was an undersecretary in the Constituent Assembly Secretariat assisting Sir BN Rau in making the first draft of the Constitution; Amb. Latha Reddy, a former Deputy National Security Advisor of India, spoke about her grandfather HC Guruv Reddy and her granduncle Shri KC Reddy both of whom were members of the Assembly from Mysore State; Raju Ramachandran, a former Additional Solicitor General of India, spoke of his connections to Sir Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer and Begum Aijaz Rasul. Manuraj Shanmugasundaram, advocate at the High Court of Madras added contemporary perspectives to the conversation.

In April 2025, Hon'ble Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy[6] of the Madras High Court had engaged in a notable conversation with the students of the ISUD under the India@100 Series. He shared his views on judicial trends in India, his journey in the legal career and his insights into Intellectual Property Laws in India. Mr. E. Om Prakash, Senior Advocate was also present and spoke at length about the remarkable contribution the Society has made in promoting free speech and intellectual discourse.

Organisational Structure

The Indian Society for Universal Dialogue is governed by its Executive Committee headed by a student President, Vice-President, Secretary-General and Treasurer who are assisted by junior Secretaries of various ranks and responsibilities. The collective entity of the Society is the General Body of student Members who represent every class and department of the University. The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is the de jure patron of the Society. The functioning of the Society is governed by its by-laws.
