Hung M. Nguyen is a retired United States Coast Guard Captain and the first Vietnamese American graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. At the end of the Vietnam War, his family resettled in San Antonio, Texas. In defending democracy, Captain Nguyen continued his family's military service. His father and grandfather were in the South Vietnam Army.[1] General Lê Văn Tỵ, the first chief of staff of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, was his great-uncle.[2]

Career

Ohio Valley

As Commander, Sector Ohio Valley, Captain Nguyen led his organization to win both the CDR Joel Magnussen Innovation Award for Management and the Alexander Hamilton Award for Excellence.[3][4] No other Coast Guard large operations ashore unit has earned the same distinction.

Deepwater Horizon investigation

When the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon incident occurred in April 2010, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard appointed Captain Nguyen as a co-chair for the Joint Department of Homeland Security and the Department of the Interior investigation.[5][6] In improving the safety of offshore drilling, many of the team's recommendations were adopted by the Coast Guard and the International Maritime Organization.[6] Captain Nguyen was the first Coast Guard marine investigator to testify before Congress.[7]
