Draft:High Life (magazine)

  • Comment: Article copyedited to address LLM writing. Sources not verified, however, there appears to be (1) sig cov in the Independent article and (2) if it counts as a reliable source for WP purposes, sig cov in the Campaign article. Mme Maigret (talk) 14:43, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

High Life is the in-flight magazine for British Airways. The magazine was first published in 1973 for the then British European Airways (BEA). The magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1998 and its 50th anniversary in 2023.

History

edit

The magazine was first published in April 1973 by British European Airways. Passengers found it in the seat pockets along with the more expected safety cards and the magazine was intended to inform and entertain passengers in-flight.[1] The magazine consists of a mix of travel writing, interviews, science and cultural commentary.[2]

The magazine was the brainchild of journalist William Davis, who also became the first editor.[3][4]

In 1998, the magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary.[5]

In 2013, for the magazine's 40th anniversary, the editor convened a “think tank” of travel writers at a London restaurant to consider what travel might look like in 2053.[6] In 2015, the magazine partnered with The Independent to identify “21 British landmarks for the 21st century”[7]

In 2020, British Airways ceased distributing printed copies of High Life onboard its aircraft and expanded the magazine's digital distribution.[8]

Editorial leadership

edit

William Davis served as the first editor. Mark Jones was the magazine's second editor.[2] In 2006, Kerry Smith, formerly a features editor with The Independent, became the magazine's fifth editor and the first female editor.[9]

Awards and honours

edit

In 2011, the magazine was nominated for a British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) award.[10]
