Draft:Helga Mateoschat

{{AFC comment|1=I think a bit more work on sources is needed here. From what I can see there is only one independent report, which is the article in Heute (is that the Austrian publication? It's not clear). A publication like Volkstimme is not going to be considered independent and the other source is primary. That's OK for verification but we need multiple indications of notability, and the best view here is that there is currently just one, Heute. If you can improve the information on offline sources (e.g. page numbers, publication location and other details) that will also help. ChrysGalley (talk) 07:27, 24 June 2026 (UTC)

ChrysGalley, it's a joke? Verdienter Arzt des Volkes was the highest award for physicians in the GDR. Translate and reed: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdienter_Arzt_des_Volkes It was the highest honor. Nothing could top it. I won't be adding anything else to that. The content is identical to what I wrote for the German Wikipedia, where the standards are significantly higher than those of the English version. You certainly don't need to explain to me how to write articles. Publish it, or don't. You are currently abusing your reviewer privileges here. Übelst übel (talk) 16:09, 24 June 2026 (UTC)

MR Helga Mateoschat (born August 13, 1934, in Essen; died December 20, 2022, in Magdeburg)—née Nowak, formerly Schulle—was a German pediatrician and a recipient of the title Honoured Doctor of the People (Verdienter Arzt des Volkes) in the GDR.

Born in Essen, Helga Mateoschat moved to Magdeburg with her family as a child after her father secured a position there as a vocational school teacher. It was there that she experienced World War II and the destruction of the city.

After passing her university entrance exams (Abitur) in 1952, Helga Mateoschat began her medical studies at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. When the Medical Academy (MAM), know part of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, opened in Magdeburg in 1954, she immediately transferred to the newly established institution, enrolling in the first year with student ID number 4. Consequently, she was part of the first graduating class of the MAM in 1957. Following her mandatory residency, she worked at the Medical Academy’s pediatric clinic until 1965, during which time she completed her specialist training in pediatrics. In 1966, she moved to the West Polyclinic in Magdeburg, where she headed the pediatric department and the maternal counseling service until 1980.

Under her leadership, several satellite branches of the polyclinic were opened, thereby alleviating the shortage of pediatric facilities. She established specialized consultation clinics—previously uncommon—for conditions such as bronchitis and urinary tract disorders as part of the *Dispensaire* care system (a form of continuous, state-organized outpatient monitoring), taking over these functions from the university clinic. Furthermore, she introduced a comprehensive check-up for three-year-olds to conclude the maternal counseling program; this involved assessing eye alignment, hearing development, and physical and mental development before the children entered kindergarten.[1]

Alongside her work at the Poliklinik West, Helga Mateoschat completed her doctorate in medicine at the Medical Academy of Magdeburg on June 21, 1967; her dissertation was titled On the Question of Damage to Immature Newborns Caused by a Water-Soluble Vitamin K Preparation, Vit. K3 (Berlin-Chemie).[2]

In 1980, she became the district youth physician for the Wolmirstedt district. Following the political changes of 1990, she served as head of the newly established Wolmirstedt District Health Department (1990–1994) and subsequently led the health department of the newly created Ohrekreis district from 1994 until her retirement in 2000. Additionally, between 1980 and 1987, she regularly answered medical questions from readers in the Volksstimme newspaper's advice column for parents.[3][4]

Helga Mateoschat was married twice; she had three sons from her first marriage and a daughter from her second.
