Helen Ogbu (born 1972 or 1973)[1] is an Irish Labour Party politician and community activist who has served as Mayor of Galway since 2026. She has served as a Galway City Councillor since 2024.
Political career
editGalway City Councillor
editOgbu was first elected to Galway City Council at the 2024 election in the Galway City East constituency. She became the first women of colour to be elected to the council.[2]
Dáil elections
editOgbu was selected as the Labour Party candidate for the 2024 Irish general election in Galway West, finishing with 3.3% of first preference votes and was eliminated on the 8th count.[3]
She was also selected as the Labour candidate for the 2026 Galway West by-election, to fill the vacancy of Catherine Connolly upon her election as President of Ireland.[4] Ogbu, who was one of six candidates in the Vote Left, Transfer Left electoral pact,[5] received 11.4% of first preference votes and was eliminated on the 10th count.
Mayor of Galway
editOn 19 June 2026, Ogbu was elected as the 72nd Mayor of Galway, during the Annual Meeting of Galway City Council.[6] Soon after her election, reports emerged of errors surrounding her asylum timeline in Ireland. Her personal website had stated she sought asylum in Ireland in 2006 after her husband, Sunny, was assassinated in Nigeria, but Sunny actually died in 2010. On 1 July, Ogbu spoke to Galway Bay FM and said that "incompetence" was to blame for the errors.[7]
