Hassan Afeef is a Maldivian politician and long-serving member of the People's Majlis. He first sat in parliament as an MP for Thaa Atoll; after constituency boundaries were revised under the new constitution, he continued as the MP for the Vilufushi constituency. He was appointed Minister of Home Affairs in December 2010 during President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.[1][2]

Early political activity and reform cohort

edit

Afeef emerged as a parliamentarian during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period that saw a small cohort of reform-minded MPs raising issues of accountability and legal reform in the Majlis. Contemporary reporting places Afeef working alongside figures such as Mohamed Latheef (a founder of the Maldivian Democratic Party and later the Maldives’ Human Rights Ambassador) and Mohamed Waheed Hassan (later President of the Maldives) in pushing for pluralist democracy and lawful parliamentary procedure.[3][4] Other accounts from the period also highlight Afeef’s coordination with Mohamed Shihab and additional MPs pressing for transparency and amendments to restrictive statutes.[3]

Role in pro-democracy movement and MDP

edit

During the 2000s opposition movement, Afeef aligned with the pro-democracy current that coalesced into the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He served in the President’s Office as **Advisor on Political Affairs** in 2009 and was later appointed Home Affairs Minister in 2010, reflecting his senior standing during the post-2008 transition.[5][1] Ahead of the 19th Majlis in 2019, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih publicly backed Afeef as his preferred choice for Speaker, underscoring Afeef’s long experience; the MDP subsequently selected Mohamed Nasheed as its consensus candidate.[6][7]

Parliamentary career

edit

Afeef has been identified in parliamentary coverage as one of the longest-serving MPs for Vilufushi (Thaa). In June 2019, the Speaker named five senior members — including Afeef — to chair sittings when the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are absent, citing length of service.[8] During 2023 procedural disputes, Afeef presided over several contentious sittings; the Privileges/Ethics Committee subsequently reviewed his rulings, with local media detailing the outcomes and noting his role as Vilufushi MP.[9][10][11][12][13][14]

Minister of Home Affairs (2010–2012)

edit

On 11 December 2010, Afeef was appointed Home Affairs Minister, succeeding Mohamed Shihab. Parliamentary endorsement in March 2011 confirmed his post alongside other cabinet nominees.[1][15] A 2011 image released by the Government of India records Afeef’s official visit to New Delhi in his capacity as minister.[16]

Public and constituency work

edit

Reporting notes Afeef’s long association with Vilufushi projects and local oversight, including follow-up on housing and reconstruction initiatives affecting island residents.[17][18]
