Plot

The story follows Hamidabai, a veteran courtesan and performer who runs a traditional kotha struggling to survive in a changing cultural and economic landscape. As classical music and performance traditions decline, the establishment faces financial pressure and moral dilemmas.

Hamidabai remains committed to preserving the dignity of her art form while resisting commercialization and exploitation. Her daughter Shabbo represents the younger generation caught between tradition and survival.[2]

Hamidabai Ki Kothi is based on Anil Barve’s Marathi stage play originally staged in the late 1970s and later adapted for screen. The teleplay was produced by Zee Theatre and directed by Swapna Waghmare Joshi and Vijaya Mehta.

The production was noted for revisiting the classical era of kothas and courtesan culture in Indian performing arts.[3]

Reception

The teleplay received attention for its portrayal of a fading cultural tradition and the emotional conflict between artistic integrity and economic survival.

Himani Shivpuri, who played the lead role, stated in interviews that the character reflects the emotional and social complexity of performers from the kotha tradition.[4]

The production was also described as part of Zee Theatre’s initiative to revive classic Indian plays for digital audiences.[5]

Additional commentary highlighted the performances of Himani Shivpuri and the ensemble cast, particularly in portraying a declining artistic ecosystem.[6]
