Grizzly Research LLC is an American activist short-selling firm that conducts forensic financial analysis and investigative research on publicly traded corporations. Founded in 2019 by Siegfried G. Eggert, the firm publishes reports alleging accounting irregularities, corporate governance issues, undisclosed operational risks, or financial fraud, while simultaneously holding short positions in the equities of the targeted entities.[1]

History and methodology

edit

Siegfried G. Eggert serves as the firm's chief executive officer and owner.[2] The firm initially focused on U.S.-listed companies with core operations in China but branched out to target U.S. and European companies, as well.[1][3] In 2022, the activist-tracking database Breakout Point ranked Grizzly Research as the second-best-performing activist short seller of the year, tracking an average decline of 47% across its targets by year-end.[4]

The firm utilizes private investigators globally, including within mainland China, and presents its published conclusions as research opinions based on observable data and deductions.[5] Employed techniques include satellite surveillance, laboratory testing for toxins and white hat hacking.[3]

Notable Campaigns

edit

Accor SA

edit

In March 2026, Grizzly Research published an investigation alleging that over 20 international hotels operated by the French hospitality conglomerate Accor failed to maintain adequate child protection safeguards and were willing to facilitate bookings that implied human trafficking.[6][7] The report also alleged that properties in certain regional jurisdictions facilitated accommodations associated with the unauthorized transfer of Ukrainian minors.[8] Following the report, Accor publicly announced that it had commissioned independent external audits through GoodCorporation alongside internal compliance reviews to investigate the cited allegations.[8][9]

PDD Holdings (Temu)

edit

In September 2023, the firm issued a technical analysis concerning PDD Holdings' e-commerce platform, Temu. The report concluded that the application contained obfuscated data-scraping protocols and software characteristics that posed an immediate data security risk to user privacy.[10] The findings were subsequently cited regarding the platform's data management operations.[11]

In June 2022, Grizzly Research released a report targeting the U.S.-listed Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO. The firm alleged that the automaker utilized an unconsolidated related-party entity to inflate its reported revenue and net profit margins.[1] Following the publication, the company's equity valuation experienced downward pressure over the subsequent multi-year period.

GSX Techedu

edit

Between February 2020 and April 2021, Grizzly published a series of reports concerning the Chinese online education firm GSX Techedu (later renamed Gaotu Techedu), alleging accounting fraud and fabricated student enrollment data. While the company denied the claims, the equity later collapsed in connection with the broader 2021 Archegos Capital Management liquidation scandal involving Archegos founder Bill Hwang.[12][13]

Litigation and disputes

edit

Target corporate boards have contested Grizzly Research's findings, resulting in sometimes defamation lawsuits.[1][14]

  • Trulieve Cannabis Corp: In January 2020, Florida-based cannabis enterprise Trulieve Cannabis Corp and its executive leadership filed a state-level defamation and trespass lawsuit against Grizzly Research and Eggert following a December 2019 short report. The litigation was settled by the parties without any public retraction or admission of wrongdoing from Grizzly Research.[15]
  • Alpine 4 Holdings: In March 2021, Alpine 4 Holdings initiated a commercial defamation lawsuit against the firm in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. All claims asserted against Grizzly Research were dismissed by the court in 2022.[16]
  • XP Inc.: In July 2025, Brazilian financial services firm XP Inc. initiated a federal defamation lawsuit against Grizzly Research in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, arising from a March 2025 report alleging structural irregularities in XP's retail derivative products. Grizzly Research issued a formal public statement standing behind the veracity of its original research findings.[17][18]

In March 2023, following a report concerning Sigma Lithium, an independent analysis published by Fiat Lux Partners identified data matching errors regarding employee records on social professional networks. Grizzly Research subsequently issued a partial retraction clarifying the error, classifying it as a mistake involving identically named corporate entities.[19]
