Glenn Patscha (born 1970) is a Canadian-American keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, producer and recording artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is a founding member of the Americana and roots music group Ollabelle, and has toured and recorded with Bonnie Raitt since 2021.[1][2]

Early life and education

edit

Patscha was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1989, he moved from Winnipeg to New Orleans on a music scholarship to attend the University of New Orleans' jazz studies program, where he studied under Harold Battiste and Ellis Marsalis.[3][2]

While living in New Orleans, Patscha played and recorded with musicians including Earl Palmer, Victor Goines, Danny Barker, Brian Blade, Nicholas Payton, Jeremy Davenport and Leroy Jones.[4]

Career

edit

In 1998, Patscha played keyboards, piano and bass pedals, and added string arrangements on Marianne Faithfull's album Vagabond Ways.[5] He later moved to New York City, where he met Amy Helm, daughter of Levon Helm, and other musicians who would become members of Ollabelle.[6]

Patscha has recorded and performed with artists including Levon Helm, Sheryl Crow, Bettye LaVette, Gregory Porter, The Holmes Brothers, Madeleine Peyroux, Lizz Wright, Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson, Marc Cohn, Rosanne Cash and Ry Cooder.[4][7][8]

In 2013, Patscha co-produced Brotherhood, the final album by The Holmes Brothers.[9]

Ollabelle

edit

Ollabelle formed in New York City’s East Village around 2001, growing out of a Sunday-night gospel and roots-music jam at the club 9C. The band’s lineup included Patscha, Amy Helm, Byron Isaacs, Fiona McBain, Tony Leone and Jimi Zhivago.[10][11]

After recording early material with producer Steve Rosenthal, Ollabelle’s demo reached T Bone Burnett, who signed the group to his DMZ/Columbia imprint.[10] The band’s self-titled debut album, Ollabelle, was released in 2004 with Burnett involved as producer and executive producer.[12][13]

The group followed with Riverside Battle Songs in 2006, co-produced with Larry Campbell.[14][15] Ollabelle later released Before This Time, drawn from live performances.[16]

Ollabelle has reunited periodically, including performances marking the 20th anniversary of its debut album.[17][18]

Other recordings and film work

edit

Patscha was a member of the trio Ellis, Levy & Patscha, whose album Say It Quiet was reviewed by the Financial Times.[19]

He co-scored the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film Sangre De Mi Sangre with Brian Cullman.[20] He has also scored the Finnish film Kukkulan Kuningas - On Thin Ice and short films by photographer Mary Ellen Mark and documentarian Martin Bell.[4]

With Bonnie Raitt

edit

Since 2021, Patscha has toured and recorded with Bonnie Raitt.[1] In 2026, he was described as a longtime “fierce defender and fan of Winnipeg” in coverage of Raitt’s Winnipeg performance.[2]

A 2025 review of Raitt’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall described Patscha as a Canadian keyboard player who had previously toured with Ry Cooder, Rosanne Cash and Marc Cohn.[21]

Personal life

edit

Patscha lives in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada.[2]
