Gerald Verrier (born December 5, 1958) is a British-American former professional darts player who competed in both World Darts Federation (WDF) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events.
Career
editOriginally born in Devon, England, Verrier played darts for the county in the early 1980s,[2] but was better known for his work on the US darts circuit following a move to Salem, Oregon in the middle of the decade.[3] His time on the American circuit was fruitful, winning tournaments including the Golden Gate Classic[4] and the Oregon Open.[5][6], at one stage claiming a top-ten rank in the country.[7]
He did participate in global events such as the World Cup (coming third in 1993) and British Open[8], while he also would participate in the BDO World Masters in 1988[9] and 1992[10], but largely played in the US prior to becoming one of a handful of players from the American circuit who joined up with the WDC (now PDC) to play in the 1994 WDC World Darts Championship[11][12][13], following the 1993 split in darts. Despite beating fellow American Dave Kelly, he failed to progress past the group stage, although he would be more successful in other PDC events later that year such as the inaugural World Matchplay and the Lada UK Masters, reaching the last 16 on both occasions.[14][15] He would also play in the final two iterations of the PDC World Pairs event, partnering Sean Downs and Harry Robinson respectively.[16][17]
He would match his best World Matchplay run again in 1998, defeating Eric Bristow in the process[18][19], but this would prove to be the peak of his success within the PDC. Verrier rarely troubled the later rounds of tournaments and also failed to ever pass the opening round of the World Championship.
After appearing in six World Matchplays and seven World Championships while with the PDC, Verrier made his final tournament appearance at the 2000 World Championship, losing in the first round to Peter Evison. He has not competed on the PDC circuit since.
Verrier married fellow dart player Lori Verrier (nee Branthwaite) in 1991.[20]
