The Georgian Medical Journal (GMJ; Georgian: საქართველოს სამედიცინო ჟურნალი) is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal covering medicine and public health. It is published by the Public Health Institute of Georgia (PHIG) and is based in Tbilisi, Georgia.[1]

History

edit

The Georgian Medical Journal was established by the Public Health Institute of Georgia and launched on 5 January 2025.[2] It was founded to strengthen scientific publishing infrastructure in Georgia and to provide a standards-compliant academic platform for Georgian and international medical research.

From its launch through 8 April 2026, the journal registered DOIs via Zenodo (CERN/OpenAIRE) through DataCite. On 9 April 2026, GMJ became a full member of Crossref, the international DOI registration agency for scholarly publishing, under DOI prefix 10.66636.[3]

In May 2026, the journal was added to the ETH Zurich Library catalogue and the swisscovery national library network of Switzerland, making its content accessible to researchers across 475 Swiss academic institutions.[4]

Scope

edit

GMJ publishes original research, systematic reviews, case reports, brief reports, editorials, viewpoints, commentaries, and practice guidelines across:

  • Clinical and surgical sciences
  • Public and international health

  • Medical education and bioethics
  • Health management and policy

GMJ accepts submissions in English and Georgian. All content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.[5]

Editorial governance

edit

GMJ maintains editorial independence from its publisher and operates in accordance with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All research manuscripts undergo double-anonymised peer review by at least two independent reviewers.[6]
