George Mayamiko Edward Jobe is a Malawian health rights activist and CSO leader, and the executive director of the Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN).[1] He is also the former executive director of the Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM).[2]
During his early days, he was also known as Bonzo Matampa, a name he used as a story teller on Morning Basket, a radio show on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Radio 1.[3] He was also a radio drama actor on Nzeru Nkupangwa on the same MBC radio 1. He has since retired from radio.
Jobe was one of the founding staff of CRECCOM and he joined the organisation as Training,Assessment & Communications Director in 1998 when he had just graduated from the University of Malawi's Chancellor College.[4][failed verification] He became the executive director of CRECCOM in 2009 after the retirement of Zikani Kaunda. Jobe retired from CRECCOM in February 2016 and he joined the Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) as its Executive Director MHEN is an "independent alliance of organizations and individuals promoting equity and quality" in health care, and is based in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.[5]
At MHEN he has supported the increment of the health budget to comply with the Abuja declaration.[6] He also successfully advocated for the establishment of the National Health Fund to provide a pool of health funding to achieve universal health coverage.[7] In May 2020, he was appointed into the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 as a voice for the Civil Society.[8] He was also appointed in 2025 into the Presidential taskforce on public health emergencies which was appointed to deal with the M-Pox outbreak and other public health emergencies.[9]
He is the chairperson for the Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (CONGOMA).[10]
Advocacy and key focus areas
editAs head of MHEN, Jobe focuses on several critical areas of public health:
Health Financing: He has consistently urged the Malawian government to meet the Abuja Declaration target of allocating 15% of the national budget to the health sector. In 2024, he commended the government for reaching a 12.2% allocation.[6]
Policy Transparency: In January 2026, Jobe called for greater transparency regarding a health cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Malawi and the United States, advocating for the inclusion of civil society organizations (CSOs) in its implementation.[11]
Adolescent Health: He advocates for targeted budget allocations to prevent unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions among young people.
Public Health Crisis Management: Jobe has been vocal during national health emergencies, providing guidance on the prevention of Cholera, Mpox, and COVID-19..[12] He also advocated for vaccine access equality during the COVID-19 pandemic.[13]
Public appointments
editPresident Arthur Peter Mutharika him to the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.[8] Later, President Lazarus Chakwera also appointed him to the Presidential Taskforce on Public Health Emergencies in early 2025. This appointment was viewed as a significant step toward integrating civil society perspectives into national emergency response strategies..[9] In 2019, he was also appointed into a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abductions and killings of persons with albinism in Malawi. [14]
