From Below is an upcoming australian psychological horror movie written and directed by Sean Loch. Starring Alyla Browne[2][3]
Follows 15-year-old Riley traveling across the outback with her father when an invisible force drags him away, leaving her in a life-or-death struggle against a terrifying creature only visible to its next victim.[4][5]
Premise
editRiley, stranded in the harsh Australian Outback is forced into a fragile alliance with a stranger when they are hunted by a terrifying, mysterious creature that is only visible to its next intended victim.[6]
Riley and her father, Tom, navigate a strained journey through the Outback to attend her estranged mother’s funeral. While investigating two abandoned cars at a remote desert crossing, Tom is violently abducted by a creature that only he can see, and dragged to a horrifying underground lair. Riley is left stranded in the car, but quickly realises she is not alone: Claudia, a desperate survivor in one of the other cars, starts communicating with her over the radio. She says her boyfriend Oliver was taken by the creature the day before, and begs Riley for help.[6]
Risking her life, Riley joins Claudia and they plot to fend off the unseen force, rescue Tom and escape certain death. As Claudia’s self-serving motives are revealed, however, Riley finds herself in a deadly desert trap, while the monster starts closing in on its prey.[6]
Production
editFrom Below, previously called Rear View Mirror, began as a movie pitch on 2020 for the competition AACTA Pitch: ISOLATION, where he was, along with Sam Price, one of 20 finalists to make it pass the first round: "Crossing the desert to visit her sick mother, an unassertive teen, along with her father, are hunted by a malicious entity that only reveals itself to its next victim."[7][8]
Eventually Rear View Mirror became the name for a short film of Sean Loch with a similar aproach: "Stranded on a remote desert highway, a young couple soon discover they are not alone".[9]
During the development process of From Below, Loch also worked closely with Joel Anderson, known for Lake Mungo and his work on Late Night With The Devil. The screenplay featured on the Black List, trending under “Top Horror Scripts” for six weeks.[10] Screen Queensland is supporting the project through its Screen Finance and Development funds.[11][12]
From Below is slated to begin production in Birdsville, Queensland, in 2026.[11][13][14]
