Fernando Carpaneda is a Brazilian artist whose work includes painting, sculpture, and mixed-media installations. His artwork frequently explores themes of identity, religion, queer culture, and the punk subculture of New York City. His work has been exhibited in the United States and Brazil, including at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and the Heckscher Museum of Art, and is held in the collections of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil and the Tom of Finland Foundation.
Career
editCarpaneda was born in Brazil and later established his artistic career in the United States. A self-taught artist, he works in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. His work has been featured in Brazilian newspapers and magazines since the 1990s, including Correio Braziliense, O Popular, Tribuna do Brasil, and Época magazine.[1][2][3][4]
Carpaneda is included in the Itaú Cultural Encyclopedia, a Brazilian reference work documenting artists and cultural figures.[5]
His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States and Brazil. In 2011, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art presented his solo exhibition Queer Punk in New York City. His exhibitions and artwork have also been discussed in independent publications including The Villager, Time Out New York, Village Voice, and New Partisan.[6][7][8][9]
His work was selected for the Long Island Biennial at the Heckscher Museum of Art in 2020, 2022, 2024, and 2026.[10][11][12][13][14]
Carpaneda's work often explores themes of identity, religion, LGBTQ+ culture, and the punk subculture of New York City.
His painting Jesus Christ was sold through Sotheby's as part of the New York Academy of Art's annual Take Home a Nude auction.[15]
Carpaneda's work has been published in books and cultural journals including Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation and Queen's Quarterly.[16][17]
Exhibitions
editIn 2011, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art presented Carpaneda's solo exhibition Queer Punk in New York City.[18][19]
Carpaneda's exhibitions and artwork have been featured in independent publications including Time Out New York, Village Voice, and New Partisan.[20][21][22]
His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and art fairs in Brazil, the United States, and internationally, including the Kenosha Public Museum in Wisconsin, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York City, and the Heckscher Museum of Art on Long Island.
Collections
editCarpaneda's work is held in public and private collections in Brazil and the United States. His painting Pride was acquired for the permanent collection of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil.[23][24]
His work is also included in the permanent collection of the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles.[25]
Awards and recognition
editIn 2025, Carpaneda received Best in Show at the Art of New York exhibition at the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, New York.[26]
In 2024, Carpaneda received an Honorable Mention in the South Arkansas Arts Center's national Juried Art Competition and Exhibition for his acrylic painting Embracing Differences.[27]
In 1997, Carpaneda received an Honorable Mention in Assemblage at the V Prêmio BEG competition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Goiânia, Brazil.[28]
