The Fajr 224 (Persian: فجر) is an unlicensed Iranian copy of the M4 carbine produced by the Defense Industries Organization.

History

edit

The Fajr 224 rifle was produced by the Defense Industries Organization (DIO) of Iran. It first appeared in state media and defense exhibitions (such as the IPAS exhibition in Tehran) around late 2014. By October 2015, the rifle was seen in the hands of specialized units during the "Moharram" rapid reaction force exercises.

Unlike the H&K G3 (the Iranian Army's standard service rifle) or the AK-variant KL-7.62 (standard for the IRGC), the Fajr 224 was never intended for general infantry. Its adoption was specific to NEZAJA (Iranian Army Ground Forces) Special Forces, specifically for the 65th Airborne Special Forces Brigade (NOHED), and Rapid Reaction units, which are specialized "commando" units that require more modular, 5.56 platform weapons for urban or specialized operations. Not much is known about the weapon, however, it is known to be used by a few groups of the Iranian Army in limited service.

Design

edit

The Fajr 224 is a direct reverse-engineered copy of the M4A1. Interestingly, it is often seen with accessories that are also Iranian-made clones of Western optics, such as copies of the Trijicon ACOG or Aimpoint red dot sights. The weapon comes with folding iron sights for backup in case the optics fail to operate or stops working.
