Erdal Ozkaya is an Australian cybersecurity practitioner, author, and academic. He spent more than 25 years in Enterprise IT Environments , risk management and cybersecurity.,[1] he has authored several technical books utilized by cybersecurity enthusiasts as well as across university courses and information security training tracks.[2][3] Currently, he serves as the Chief Information Security Officer at Morgan State University,[4] and his prominent co-authored work, Cybersecurity , Attack and Defense Strategies, has been translated into five languages, including Chinese, Russian, and Korean.[2]
Education and academic work
editOzkaya completed a PhD at Charles Sturt University in Australia, where his doctoral research focused on identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities within social media networks.[5] Following his graduation, he co-authored the textbook Inside the Dark Web alongside researcher Rafiqul Islam, which is cataloged within the Charles Sturt University research repository.[6]
He wrote a conference paper titled 'The Use of Social Media for Terrorism' for the NATO Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism, NATO Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism."[7] In academia, his peer-reviewed research and reference literature have generated 426 citations, tracking an h-index of 9.[3]
Career
editBefore he joins Morgan State University, he served as a Regional Chief Information Security Officer for Standard Chartered Bank, managing operations across the Middle East and Africa region, and worked as a Cybersecurity Architect at Microsoft. In Late 2025, Ozkaya joined a HBCU university as Chief Information Security Officer to manage the institution's information security operations, technical architecture, and risk governance frameworks.[4][8] . Outside his primary corporate assignments, he hosts the cybersecurity industry program and podcast Sentinel's Talk Show , helps CIO and CISO communities and blogs about cybersecurity leadership.
Books
editCybersecurity, Attack and Defense Strategies, written alongside Yuri Diogenes, was originally published in 2018, with subsequent expanded editions following in 2019 and 2022. The text serves as an industry reference guide for technical professionals managing corporate threat vectors.[2] Google Scholar citations for the inaugural edition exceed 220.[3]
In 2018, he published Learn Social Engineering, which was designated a Cybersecurity Canon Candidate by Palo Alto Networks.[9] His 2019 volume, Cybersecurity: The Beginner's Guide , was published by Packt and provides introductory baseline frameworks for modern security architectures.[10]
To address regional enterprise markets, Ozkaya partnered with Raif Sarıca and Şükrü Durmaz to co-author the Turkish-language textbook Siber Güvenlik: Saldırı ve Savunma Stratejileri, published by Buzdağı Yayınevi in 2019.[11] And then “Sosyal Muhendislik” by Seçkin yayinevi in 2022. His broader technical bibliography covers specialized instructional volumes detailing cloud incident response, data analytics, corporate security leadership, threat intelligence, and financial network infrastructure.[3]
Recognition and public speaking
editOzkaya was inducted into the EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker Hall of Fame. In 2025, he was inducted into the CCISO Hall of Fame.< ref name="cciso-hof"> He is a regular speaker at international technology, media, and defense forums. In April 2023, the Turkish technology magazine ICT Media published a multi-page interview with Ozkaya titled 'Siber güvenlik bir beka sorunudur' (Cybersecurity is an existential matter).[12]
His platform appearances include presentations for the International Cybersecurity Conference and the International New Media Conference at Istanbul Gelişim University.[13][14] In August 2018, he served as a technical domain expert at the Turkish Foreign Ministry's annual Ambassadors Conference in Ankara, providing briefings on modern cyber threat landscapes.[15][16] He delivered a keynote at the 2025 Tourism Technologies Summit in Antalya.[17][18] He participated as speaker at conferences like Microsoft Ignite’s across US a as well as Black Hat MEA many other conferences like SECON, AKTA in Azerbaijan …
