The Environmental Information Center (EIC) (Chinese: 環境資訊中心; pinyin: huán jìng zī xùn zhōng xīn) is an independent media outlet in Taiwan specializing in environmental journalism. Established in 2000 by the Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA), it operates as an online news platform providing daily coverage of environmental issues in Taiwan, China, and internationally.[1] A 2025 academic study analyzing 20 years of marine pollution coverage in Taiwan identified EIC as one of five major news sources examined alongside mainstream newspapers, with 339 articles (9.7% of the sample) from the platform.[1] Since 2023, EIC has been operated by the Trust in Nature Foundation (formerly TEIA).[2]

History

edit

Establishment (2000–2001)

edit

The Environmental Information Center was launched on 17 April 2000, initially as an email newsletter service by the Taiwan Environmental Information Association.[3] The daily "Environmental Information Newsletter" aimed to disseminate environmental news and information to the Taiwanese public. TEIA was formally registered as a non-profit organization in June 2001.[4]

Development (2001–2023)

edit

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, EIC expanded its coverage to include international environmental news, feature articles, and expert commentary. The platform developed into a comprehensive environmental information database, archiving news and data related to biodiversity, climate change, energy transition, land use, and pollution control.[3] TEIA, the organization operating EIC, became a member of Wetland Link International (WLI) for wetland education[4] and serves as the Taiwan branch of the international Reef Check Foundation.[5]

Organizational transition (2023–present)

edit

In December 2023, TEIA transformed into the Trust in Nature Foundation, with EIC continuing as its media platform.[6]

Coverage and content

edit

EIC provides daily environmental news coverage focusing on Taiwan, China, and global environmental issues. According to a 2025 peer-reviewed study published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, EIC was identified as a significant source of environmental news in Taiwan, with researchers analyzing 339 articles from the platform as part of a 20-year study of marine pollution coverage.[1] The study examined EIC's coverage alongside major mainstream newspapers including United Daily News, Liberty Times, and China Times. Content areas include:[3]

Biodiversity conservation Climate change and global warming Energy transition and renewable energy Land use and urban development Pollution control and environmental health

The platform also serves as an environmental information database, providing researchers and activists with accessible data on Taiwanese environmental issues.

Recognition

edit

In 2016, EIC's parent organization received the 40th Golden Tripod Award in the books and digital publication category for Class is on Biodiversity 4: Green Economy and Happiness.[7] In 2021, EIC's investigative series "What Happened to the Photoelectric?" was nominated for the Global Chinese Sustainability Reporting Award.[8]

Parent organization

edit

The Environmental Information Center is operated by the Trust in Nature Foundation (TNF), formerly known as the Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA). TNF is dedicated to environmental conservation through two primary approaches: enhancing environmental information distribution and promoting environmental charitable trusts.[9] The organization manages Taiwan's first environmental trust, the Nature Valley Environmental Education Base in Hsinchu County, established in 2014.[4] TNF is a member of international environmental organizations including Wetland Link International and operates as the Taiwan branch of Reef Check Foundation.[5]
