Emile Sweron (born 27 January 1864) was a Belgian road cyclist during the 1880s. He was a pioneer in the earliest era of Belgian road cycling and co-founder of the cycling club Union Velocipédique Louvaniste.[1] He won many national and international races, including the 1884 Belgian National Road Race Championships.

Sweron was born in Ixelles, in 1864.[1] He studied agronomy at Institut Agronomique.[2][3]

Cycling

He founded together with Joseph Delin the cycling club Union Velocipédique Louvaniste on 22 September 1882.[4] It was the first cycling club of Leuven.[5] The association played a pioneering role in the early days of Belgian cycling and had a signifcant role in the foundation of among others the famous cycling classic Paris–Brussels. It would receive the designation royal.[4][6]

Sweron is named as one of the main cyclists from his era, with his best year 1884.[7] He was the winner of the 1884 Belgian National Road Race Championships on 7 September in Ostend.[8] The prize was 100 Belgian franc and a gold medal.[9] He also won that year other national and internationl prizes, including winning an international race in Antwerp in August 1884 and races in Ostend.[10][11]

Also later year he had several more achievements, including winning the international race in Liège in 1886.[12]

In 1887 he won two times a silver medal at Belgian National Road Race Championships. He finished second in July in Ostend in the 10000m velocipede championships and in August he finished second in the 5000m tricycle championships.[13][14]
