editChristopher McQuarrie told Collider that Tom Cruise had an idea for a sequel, and that the concept is "locked and loaded".[1] In April 2016, Doug Liman returned to direct film, and Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse were hired to write the script for the film.[2] In October 2016, Liman stated that the film would "revolutionize how people make sequels", and went on to say that the story is "much better than the original film" and that it is "a sequel that's a prequel."[3]
In March 2019, the film was officially greenlit at Warner Bros. Pictures, Matthew Robinson writing the new screenplay, and Cruise and Emily Blunt reprising their roles from the original film.[4] In October 2019, Liman confirmed that the script was finished.[5] After numerous delays, Liman said on Instagram that the project was still in "planning stages" as of January 2020.[6] In January 2021, Liman continued to suggest a sequel would eventually happen and merely needs the two stars to pull the trigger.[7] Blunt has since stated that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the budget for another film would be "too expensive", casting further doubt on a possible sequel.[8]
In January 2024, following a contractual partnership between Cruise and Warner Bros. Pictures, it was revealed that the actor would develop and appear in various projects from the studio. It was stated that co-heads/co-chairpeople Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy had been in negotiations with Cruise to develop an Edge of Tomorrow sequel following the project's many delays.[9] They discussed a potential sequel at a meeting that month.[10]
Filming
editPrincipal photography is expected to begin in late 2026.[11]
